Classwork: Our essential question this week is "Why did the Roman Empire Fall?" To begin, we brainstormed reasons why empires decline and fall. After discussing, we focused our attention to the Roman Empire. In groups, we investigated this question by travelling to seven centers. Each center provided a source and piece of evidence to help solve this problem. Homework: 9/27: Blue and Green classes: Please finish any centers notes, you did not complete in class. Use the link below for the Padlet and EdPuzzle pages (also located on the Google Classroom stream). If the EdPuzzle video does not work, please speak to me in class!

Classwork: We read a secondary source about Rome and Julius Casear. After reading, we got "highlighter happy" and used highlighters to mark up the text. Using one color, we highlighted textual evidence to show Caesar's positive influence. Using a different color, we highlighted textual evidence to show his negative influence. Additionally, we summarized each piece of textual evidence and began to analysis the source. Using textual evidence, students answered the essential question "Was Julius Caesar a positive or a negative influence for Rome? Explain your conclusions."
Class Goals: To identify the author's purpose of a text; To cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of a source. Homework: Please finish your Julius Caesar response. We began by brainstorming resources individual used in the past ("ancient times") to create accurate earth descriptions. Next, each group was assigned one theme to research and become an expert in. After researching, groups created 1-2 Google slides to present information. These slides are combined with the other groups, to create one power point displaying the five themes of geography. You can view the slide-shows by clicking your class link. Homework: Using your class link below, take notes on the five themes of geography. Your graphic organizer should be completed next class. Each group created a flipgrid video, presenting their theory and evidence. After finalizing all the theories, we responded to each others' video by using our "accountability talk."
Homework: Please bring in the signed class sheet, if you have not already. Classwork: We spent one period finishing analyzing the evidence, from the "Case of the Student Teacher Gone Missing." After, in our groups, we began to draw conclusions and inferences about who is the guilty teacher. Additionally, we identified each piece of evidence as a primary or secondary source.
Using Google Forms, each group outlined there evidence and built their case. During the next class, we will be presenting our cases and discussing the process as a class. Homework: None! Enjoy the Fall weather :) Use the following link to access the Google Forms (class work): goo.gl/forms/18Il6WQ0V5gLZFDu1 Classwork: We participated in an investigation to solve "The Case of the Student Teacher Gone Missing." We solved a crime based on our analysis of the evidence. We examined 12 pieces of evidence, deciding if it was classified as "primary" or "secondary" source evidence. Then, we analyzed each piece of relevant evidence to draw conclusions about who the guilty teacher might be.
Homework: Please finish your summaries, if you did not complete it in class. Classwork: We tested our close reading and summarizing skills! We read a passage titled, "Origins of Rome." After reading, we used close reading strategies to mark up the text, and then created a summary. This summarizing practice will be used to help target different aspects of summarizing to discuss in class. Why are we summarizing in Social Studies?? As we read many primary sources, it is important to know how to effectively analyze those sources and break them down. Summarizing the main ideas and author's purpose, will help to better understand and interpret the primary source.
Homework: Continue to bring in those class information sheets (Please ignore the information on Edmodo. Our team will be using Weebly, instead of this website platform.) Thoughtful Thursday: To help me learn more about your student and better teach them, I asked each individual to finish this sentence "I wish my teacher knew..." I asked this to each student, as I care about their success. I want to use the responses to better teach and engage them as individuals. Classwork: We reviewed the classroom expectations and routines by taking a tour of the classroom. After learning the routines and rituals, we demonstrated our understanding of these expectations by creating a skit. Each group was assigned one expectations/routine to showcase to the class. Stay tuned for pictures from all classes! Check out the video below for some beginning of the year motivation :) Homework: Returned a signed class information sheet by Friday, 9/9. An extra copy can be found under "documents" on the right. Welcome back to KMS! I am so excited to have you in my Social Studies class. This week we learned all about effective collaboration by working with a group to solve a problem. Check out our findings and fun! Groups had to save Sam (the little worm) from "drowning" on the table. We needed to determine a way to get the life preserver on Sam and save him!
